New to Los Santos and looking for work? I got you.
These aren't really jobs, but other ways in which you can make money without breaking the law. Great for a side-gig alongside your full-time job maybe!
Buy a Fishing Rod from any general store. You only need the standard rod to begin, so don’t worry about buying any of the specialised rods yet.
Take your fishing rod to the pier shown in the picture. Once you arrive, download the MyRod app on your phone and open it to check that you are inside the pier’s fishing zone. Grab some bait and then you can begin fishing!
When you’ve finished, take your fish to the freezer inside the nearby Burger Shot, just around the corner from the pier. You can sell everything you have caught there (except protected fish).
(( Press Y when in the back freezer to sell all fish from your inventory ))As you gain fishing experience and level up, you’ll unlock better bait, specialised fishing rods and more valuable fish. Your earnings should gradually increase as you reach these higher levels.
Fish locations:
Pier (Left of city) - Bass, Salmon, Tuna, Shark, Snapper
Calafia (North of Stab City) - Bass, Salmon, Tuna, Marlin
Swamps (South of Zancudo) - Bass, Salmon, Swordfish
Paleto (Far north) - Bass, Salmon, Tuna
Baradock (Top-right of map) - Bass, Salmon, Dragon Fish
Creek (Left of Calafia) - Bass, Salmon, Goldfish, Sturgeon
Vinewood (Red icon) - Bass, Salmon, Protected Fish
The fish listed are available in those locations, but you must still have the appropriate fishing level and bait. There is also a 5% chance of catching a random species regardless of bait or zone.
Progression:
Upgrade your rod whenever a new one becomes available, then choose whether your focus is profit or XP:
Profit:
Level 0–4: Trash Bait at the pier (for Bass and Salmon | $6,500/hour)
Level 5–14: Worm Bait at the pier (for Bass and Salmon | $7.500/hour)
Level 15–29: Shrimp Bait at the pier (for Bass, Tuna and Snapper | $9,500/hour)
Level 30+: Premium Bait at the pier (for Bass and Shark | $10,500+/hour)
XP (fishing solo):
Level 0–4: Trash Bait at any non-pier zone (for Bass and Salmon)
Level 5–14: Worm Bait at any non-pier zone (for Bass and Salmon)
Level 15–29: Shrimp Bait at Calafia or Paleto (for Bass and Tuna)
Level 30–49: Premium Bait at Vinewood Lake (for Bass and Protected Fish - illegal), or at the pier (for Bass and Shark - legal)
Level 50–69: Master Bait at the Swamps (for Bass and Swordfish)
Level 70–89: Exotic Bait at Creek (for Bass, Goldfish and Sturgeon)
Level 90+: Legendary Bait at Baradock (for Bass and Dragon Fish), or continue with Creek as its easier to get to and same XP on average.
These recommendations are based on data collected up to level 100.
Bait:
When buying bait, shop around carefully and don't over-buy. They come in packs of 10 and it's not obvious. Paying less will improve your profits, so buying from the cheapest available store is always recommended. For me the cheapest were the stores to the west (Chumash, Great ocean highway, far left of route 68).
Above premium bait, higher-tier bait is mainly useful for earning more XP, catching particular species or targeting the currently preferred fish. Regular zones give full XP but require a minigame and may become depleted.
Pro tip:
Buy a Verus quad bike (pictured). It has 200vol storage, and put 3-4 crates inside to carry LOTS of fish in one trip. You can generally get a crate for free if you just ask around, especially gangsters, they have lots spare for some reason.
Fishing stats for nerds (Pier zone, profit focus)
Go to a general store and buy a metal detector, a couple of shovels, and some spare batteries, then head to one of the claw-looking Treasure Hunt blips on your GPS.
Equip the metal detector and walk around the area. It will beep faster and display more bars as you get closer to buried treasure. When it reaches 10 bars, press E to dig. Try to pinpoint the strongest signal before digging, at lower Archeology levels you need to be quite precise.
(( Drag the metal detector from your inventory to the melee weapon slot, right click to turn it on, then press V to go in first-person view, it's much easier in first person ))As you level up, you’ll dig faster, locate treasures more easily, use less detector condition, receive better sale prices, and unlock more rewarding areas.
Your detector loses condition while switched on, so take it out of the slot while driving, sorting your inventory, or taking a break. Shovels also wear down after successful digs, so keep an eye on your equipment.
You can Analyze discovered artifacts from your inventory to learn what they are and how much they’re worth. Some people say there's stolen items that can be dug up...But how would I know they're stolen, I just dug them from the sand 😇
I sell my items to that one girl standing on one of the huts on the north part of the beach and she accepts any old junk. You can also sell your items easier at the pawn shop (blue P icon near the bank) by dropping them on the floor, but it's a bit of a drive away.
Be careful where and when you dig. Illegal locations, such as graveyards, can alert the law enforcement for unauthorized digging. (The picture to the left is me accidentally digging in this location shortly before LSPD showed up, I got let off with a warning)

If you insist on this method of making money, bring a knife (or gun) to the hills and roads where the deer icons are and look for stray animals. You can then gut the animals for their meat (( /gut )). This meat can then either be cooked on a campfire for food, or sold at one of the yellow $ locations.
The Diamond Casino & Resort is a way many people think they can make money. Sure, some people get big wins but it is overall a scam. The only one worth playing is Poker because you're playing against other people, not against the house who will do everything it takes to bleed you dry.
But if you're a masochist and don't like having money you can find this in East Vinewood!
